Saturday

I wake at eight to the sounds of Hanoi, feeling much more positive today, the last couple of days have been a bit depressing coming from shorts and thongs weather and laid back people to jeans and jacket weather but starting to feel the Vietnamese vibe again.

I head out for a breakfast of Pho and coffee. Then it is time for shoes, there is an entire two blocks of shoe shops and to make it even harder I don’t know what I want. I bought a pair in the end out of sheer frustration and fatigue.

Note to self – when unsure, stop, have a coffee and cigarette and try again!

They’re not too bad and certainly help with the cool day. I changed into them at a café and walked around the lake, apparently the place to take wedding photos, I came across at least ten bridal photo sessions along the way
– Oh hell, I left the thongs at the café, oh well I still have the other pair – not that it looks like I’ll need them anytime soon.

I stopped for a sandwich at the ice cream shop, there’s just no getting away from it, I guess as long as I’m in a tourist area I’m going to have listen to Xmas music and see all the Santas and Xmas trees.
I thought here in the north at least it wouldn’t be too full on but there are signs of Xmas everywhere, I should have known better, I could only escape it if I went to live in a hill tribe for the next week but that would be too cold and I’m quite happy in my new room.

After a movie retreat to my room I decide a massage is well overdue. After a traditional Lao massage at six dollars a “Swedish relaxing” massage at twice the price was quite a let down, but maybe it was more the masseuse, she was a rough one.

After the massage I picked up my washing and dropped it at my room and went for an adventurous wander through the streets for something to eat and a few beers. I ended up at "The Irish Hound", a place Nick and I frequented last year and had a great time.

Would you believe it Nick, those same three hookers were at that same outside table. For everyone else, no that’s not the good time we had, we took control of the jukebox (laptop) and played our favourite music until closing.
Anyway after dinner and a few beers there I could feel my kidneys pleading with me so after the last couple of months in Laos I took my kidneys back to my room and passed out yet again to another movie, hooray for TV. I’m not desperate for work so I don’t want to spend the next month or two drinking my time away, although every now and again………………
